Interested in Mentoring Our Youth?

9/26/25 Contact Kelly Skinner

Are you interested in mentoring our yoUUth? We are looking for congregants who are interested in being a part of our Coming of Age programming this fall!

Coming of Age (COA) supports youth as they transition into young adulthood through opportunities to explore their spirituality, deepen their understanding of Unitarian Universalism, and begin to define their beliefs and values. We have fourteen youth in 8th, 9th, and 10th grades participating this year.

A highlight of the Coming of Age experience for the youth is having a mentor. The opportunity for them to connect with a committed adult from the congregation who will listen, guide, and be there for them is an important part of growing into their UU Faith.

Adults who mentor often experience a spiritual deepening of their own. Many youth and mentors continue their mentor and mentee relationship after COA is finished. These relationships help to break down generational walls and unite our congregation.

Mentors will serve in the role between November 2025 and May 2026. Here is a summary of the expectations:

  • Pass a background check and watch the training video.
  • Meet one-on-one with your mentee once a month in a safe public space.  I will set up various opportunities at the church or in the community where you can have private conversations.
  • Join in specific Coming of Age classes as available. Classes meet on Sunday mornings from 10:30 am to noon. I will outline these opportunities soon.
  • Attend all or part of the Spring COA Retreat. Date is TBA. You will be polled in December/January to find out your availability.
  • Be present with youth as part of the Coming of Age Worship Service on May 17, 2026.

Mentors should be involved in the UUCUC community and be familiar with Unitarian Universalism. Mentorships are usually successful when mentors interact with their mentee without judgment. When the mentor is willing to discuss their own spiritual journey, be honest, sincere, and present, success comes naturally.
